Metrolink Test Train Operating Weekday Nights and Weekends on San Bernardino Line

Rail agency performing legally-required tests in advance of Positive Train Control (PTC) implementation on locomotives

LOS ANGELES – Communities along Metrolink’s San Bernardino Line will experience additional train traffic weeknights in November. While this community currently experiences some freight traffic through the night, the Metrolink test train will add to the nighttime train traffic for a short period of time.

The cities affected include El Monte, Baldwin Park, Covina, San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont, Montclair, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Rialto and San Bernardino.

In preparation for the introduction of additional PTC-equipped locomotives into service, Metrolink will be operating a test train along its San Bernardino Line Monday through Friday, starting tonight. These tests are required by the Federal Railroad Administration and will occur between the hours of 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. There may be some additional testing during daytime hours on Saturday and Sunday.

“We extend our most sincere apologies, in advance, for any inconveniences that the community may experience as we conduct these tests,” said Metrolink CEO Art Leahy. “These tests are required by law and will result in an even safer railroad system for Southern California.”

Testing includes a single train performing operational and braking tests at various speeds along the entirety of the San Bernardino Line. In addition to the sound of train engines operating, train horns will be blown at crossings, as required by federal law.
